What Is the Triple Bottom Line (TBL)?
In economics, the triple bottom line (TBL) maintains that companies should commit to focusing as much on social and environmental concerns as they do on profits. TBL theory posits that instead of one bottom line, there should be three: profit, people, and the planet.
Glossary
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is the obligation of an organization to serve both its own interests and those of society.
Situation:
You are the CEO of a clothing company, and your factories are based in France and the workers are paid a fair salary along with good benefits. One day, over a meal with a friend he tells you that he uses factories in another country and that he spends a lot less money on wages than you. He invites you to use those factories too.
You know that the factory workers used by your friend’s company are not treated well and that if you use those factories, then hundreds of people will lose there jobs. Additionally, these factories in poor countries usually pollute the local environment because the government does not regulate them. He tells you that if you do use those factories then you will make a lot more profit and out-compete competitors. Moreover, you can use some of that extra profit to donate to charities and community projects.
Questions:
- How do the 4 CSR responsibilities relate here?
- How does the triple bottom line relate here?
- What would you say to that friend?
