Supply and Demand for Securities
In a bull market, there is strong demand and weak supply for securities. In other words, many investors wish to buy securities but few are willing to sell them. As a result, share prices will rise as investors compete to obtain available equity.
In a bear market, the opposite is true: more people are looking to sell than buy. The demand is significantly lower than supply and, as a result, share prices drop.
Use supply and demand analysis to explain how stock prices might fluctuate as a result of one of the following headlines.
- Bombardier lands jet-plane order for $2.1 billion with US airline company
- Stelco projected to lose $50 million in fourth quarter as steel costs soar and foreign steel producers flood the market.
- Intel to develop a microchip that boosts the capacity of Bell’s fibre optic networks.
- Fiat Chrysler announces production cuts and temporary plant closings as sales decline and vehicle inventory rises.
- Transition Metals reports high-grade finds of platinum near Thunder Bay, Ontario.
