Lesson 4.4 - The House on Mango Street

Have you ever sold any used personal item online (furniture, clothing, equipment etc. What was the item? What service did you use, and why did you sell it? If you did not ever sell anything, what used item have you purchased on line. (1-2 minute video)
Teacher will read the Vignette Louis, His Cousin & His Other Cousin on page 23.
In your Breakout group discuss and answer the following questions: (1) What do you know about Louie's cousin Marin just from the few lines? (2) What do you know about Marin's other cousin who owns the car? (3) What conflicts are going on in this Vignette?
Assign one group member to record everyone's ideas and bring that report back to the class in 15 minutes.
In your Breakout Group read the vignette titled, Marin on page 26.
There is a great deal of information provided in her character description, her actions and behaviour, her words and indirect conversations. Use your Character Chart to cite Marin's character traits. Does she represent an Archetype? The answer is yes. Can you describe her qualities as an Archetype. Marin is also a role model! For whom? What are some of her character flaws?
Put all that information into your Character Chart. Everyone must submit their own chart.

Read the two very short Vignettes Alicia Who Sees Mice on page 31 and Darius & the Clouds on page 33.
- Alicia Who Sees Mice Alicia has a lot of stress in her life. From a careful reading of the Vignette what is causing her stress? Sum up her problems in a short 50-75 word response paragraph.
- Darius & the Clouds begins with the line "You can never have too much sky." What does the line say about the neighbourhood which is the setting for all of the Vignettes.
