• Lesson 4.4 - Respiratory system

Learning Goals: by the end of this class, you will be able to

    1. Define key terms: aerobic cellular respiration, phosphorylation, gas exchange, ventilation, trachea, bronchus, bronchiole, alveolus, diaphragm, external intercostal muscle, internal intercostal muscle, pleural membrane, pneumothorax, total lung capacity, tidal volume, inspiratory reserve volume, expiratory reserve volume, residual volume, vital capacity, VO2, VO2max.
    2. Know the formula for cellular respiration and why it is important.
    3. Know how gas exchange and ventilation is completed
    4. Know the 4 important structural features that allow it to function properly
    5. List and describe the structure and function of all key components of the respiratory tract (upper and lower). How does the specific structure support its function?
    6. Explain gas exchange and how blood transports gases
    7. Explain the mechanisms of ventilation
    8. Know what the lung capacity is and the terms associated with it.
    9. Understand how oxygen is used
    10. Know how fish use their gills to obtain oxygen from the water
