Learning Goal:
Students will analyze a non-fiction text on career choices, identifying main ideas, supporting details, and the author's perspective. They will reflect on their own career aspirations and consider the balance between passion and practicality.
Success Criteria:
Students will be successful when they can:
- Define key vocabulary related to career planning.
- Identify the main idea and supporting details of the article.
- Analyze the risks and rewards of following one’s passion in a career.
- Express a personal opinion on career decision-making using evidence.
- Conduct and summarize an interview about career choices.
General Vocabulary
Penury – Extreme poverty; the state of being very poor.
Rejection – The act of being turned down or not accepted.
Daunting – Something that feels overwhelming or intimidating.
Impractical – Not realistic or difficult to achieve in real life.
Aspiration – A strong desire to achieve something.
Entrenched – Firmly established or difficult to change.
Affluent – Wealthy; having a lot of money.
Harsh reality – The difficult or unpleasant truth.

Career counselor – A professional who helps people choose or change careers.

Bottom line – The final result or financial profit of a business.
Plateau – To reach a stable level after a period of growth.
Artisan – A skilled worker who makes things by hand.
