Lesson 1.3 - Emphasis
Learning Goals: By the end of this lesson
1. I can explain the three traits of emphasis.
2. I can use emphasis in my own speech.
Bold the words that you think should be emphasized. Then practice saying it:
I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.
I have a dream [pause] that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed. We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal.
I have a dream [pause] that one day out in the red hills of Georgia [pause] the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slaveowners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.
I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.
I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
I have a dream today.
