Learning Goals: By the end of this lesson you will be able to
• Read an information text and accurately answer simple questions to demonstrate yourunderstanding of the main ideas.
• Use post-reading strategies to identify the purpose of the text and respond to the content.
• Recognize the structure of an informational text
• Write an information text
Instructions: After reading the article, respond to the following questions. These questions are designed to help you reflect on your reading process. There are no right or wrong answers!
Retell the important ideas and information that you read.
What background knowledge did you have that helped you understand this piece?
Choose the most important information and ideas in what you read, put it in your own words, and explain why it is so important.
Who else might be interested in what you have read and why?
What more do you want to know now that you have read this text? Where might you go to
find out?
Explain how what you read is like something else you have viewed or read.
Explain your personal reaction to what you have read.
How is this information useful to you in your life or to someone that you know?
Choose some words or phrases that the writer used that you might find useful in your own reading and writing.
Choose an unfamiliar word in what you read. What strategies did you use to make sense of it?
In your opinion, was this an easy, moderately easy, or difficult piece to read? Explain.
As you watch the video, take note of the important facts related to the topic. You will need them to write a short informational text on the history of cheese!
Instructions: Follow these steps to write your one-paragraph informational text on the history of cheese.
- Choose 4-5 key pieces of information from your notes.
- Place those ideas either in chronological order ( past to present) or the order in which they appear in the video.
- Paraphrase any sentences that you have copied directly from the video, but make sure that the meaning does not change.
- Write an introductory sentence that indicates the main idea of the text.
- Write a concluding sentence that sums up the text
- Choose the best transitional statements to connect your sentences.
- Give your paragraph an appropriate title. ( Think of something other than the title of the video)
- Review your paragraph, ensuring that you have included your opinion or the first person "I".
- Check that all sentences are complete and properly punctuated.
- Share your work with a partner and use their feedback to improve your paragraph.
- Include your notes from the video in your document.
- Choose 4-5 key pieces of information from your notes.
