• Lesson 3.3: Bond Energies, Hess's Law & Enthalphy of Formation

    Learning Goals:

    1. I will be able to use average bond energies to estimate the enthalpy change for a chemical reaction.
    2. I will be able to apply Hess's law to determine the enthalpy change for a chemical reaction.
    3. I will be able to use enthalpies of formation to determine the enthalpy change for a chemical reaction.

    Specific Expectations:

    NELSON Text Reference: Section 5.3, 5.4, 5.5

    TASKS:

***Reminder to log your activities of this lesson in your current Unit Time Log Sheet

    1. Study key terms in Glossary 3.3 and do Glossary Quiz 3.3
    2. Study Bond Energy Example and Enthalpy of Formation Example
    3. Watch Hess's Law video lesson from the Unit 3 Video Lessons.
    4. Read Section 5.3 (STOP reading at the bottom of page 308. Use the example calculations presented in the video lesson and summary as a guide, NOT the examples given on pages 309 to 312), Section 5.4 and Section 5.5 in the textbook and write down any notes for yourself.
    5. Complete and submit Assignment 3.3. You can find a table of average bond energies in your Information Package
    6. Check your solutions and review as necessary.
    7. Complete Exit Card 3.3
