Wuthering Heights is the only novel by British writer Emily Bronte (1847). It is a highly imaginative work of passion and hate set on the English Yorkshire moors. The two main characters are Heathcliffe and Catherine (Cathy) Earnshaw.
Heathcliff was an orphan adopted by Cathy's family, and brought to their farm known as Wuthering Heights. Heathcliffe and Cathy grow close, and their love is the central theme of the novel. The animated film SLEEPING BETTY by NFB animator Claude Cloutier is a version of the famous fable (aka fairy tale) known as Sleeping Beauty.
The tale was first published by Giambattista Basile in his collection of tales titled The Pentamerone (published in 1634).
Sleeping Beauty has been adapted into dance form as a ballet by Peter Tchaikovsky (1889) and as an animated film by the Walt Disney Company.

While viewing the film work again with a partner, make a list (writing complete descriptive sentences) of the many ways the King and Queen try to awaken their Sleeping Betty.
What is a Synopsis? A synopsis is a very brief summary of the key plot and theme of a much longer text. Movie trailers; TV promotions etc are Synopses.
Wuthering Heights is a complex love story. Here is one synopsis that I found on the Internet:
Many people consider Wuthering Heights to be a straightforward, if intense, love story. This is a mistake. Really the story is one of revenge. It follows the life of Heathcliff, a mysterious gypsy-like man, from his childhood (about seven years old) to his death in his late thirties. Heathcliff rises in his adopted family, but then is reduced to the status of a servant. He runs away when Cathy (his step-sister) whom he loves, decides to marry another wealthy landowner. Heathcliffe returns later, rich and educated, and sets about gaining his revenge on the people that he believed ruined his life, including Cathy and her husband.
NOW IT'S YOUR TURN. WORKING WITH YOUR PARTNER, WRITE A SYNOPSIS (minimum of 25 lines) of the story told in SLEEPING BETTY
The resource posted here can be downloaded for present and future reference.
It is a very useful resource. Since many of us make basic errors in punctuating our sentences, I want you to go through the booklet carefully and review it.
Allow yourself an hour to do this!
- For your homework, prepare to be interviewed either on Friday on the following:
(1) In your oral interview, the teacher will ask you to describe 5 relevant texts that you have read in the course so far. Choose texts that you feel are connected to your life and experience (examples: narrative, informational, song lyrics, etc.) What were/are your responses to them, and why are they relevant to you?
(2) In your oral interview also describe 2 of your most successful writing responses, and 2 of your least successful writing responses. Consider (i.e., short summaries, Portfolio entries, information paragraphs, opinion pieces, news reports, graphic texts, grammar and sentence error exercises). Be prepared to give me detailed reasons for your choices.
You can make notes but do not post them on MOODLE
