Propaganda on the Farm

Napoleon does not speak much. He uses the pig, Squealer, to speak on his behalf. Squealer is described as  “a brilliant talker…who could turn black into white” (Orwell, p 10). Squealer often uses propaganda tactics to control what the animals think, influencing their behaviour.

In chapter 5 several important events take place. Imagine, you are Squealer, and you must explain these events to the animals. Write a short paragraph using at least 2 propaganda techniques, explaining each incident.

  • Mollie’s disappearance
  • The plans for the windmill
  • The dogs
  • The new rules
  • Snowball’s expulsion from the farm
