Creating Your Own Poetic Devices
Instructions: In this activity, you will try to create the types of poetic devices most commonly found in poetry. Read the instructions for each question and look at the example provided, before you begin.
1. Write a simile about any four of the following. Think carefully about the quality or feature that you want to highlight.
- a hero
- a cute baby
- a singer with a beautiful voice
- a colourful sweater
- an annoying classmate
- a difficult relationship
- something is very white
eg. My new boyfriend is as sweet as candy
2. Create metaphors for the following. Choose any 4
- life- there are many choices
- A friend who stays up late every night
- a woman with sparkly eyes
- a good and kind person
- a friend that is very important to you
- an old computer that doesn’t work anymore
- Your friend is very cowardly
e.g Miss Hodelin is a vicious mamma bear who protects her students from danger.
3. Describe any 4 of the following objects using personification. Think about what the object does and how this is similar to human behaviour.
- a teddy bear
- a car
- a pair of shoes
- time that passes quickly
- The sun moving across the sky
- The city is always busy
- Grass that is very dry
- A gentle breeze
eg. The stars winked at me as I looked out of my window.
4. Imagine that you have just arrived at a night market, where hundreds of people are buying and selling food and other interesting products.
Write descriptions of what you see, hear, smell, feel and taste. Say what. you are describing and use descriptive imagery that makes it clear which sense you are using. ( 1-2 descriptions using each sense)
eg. The chicken skewers are juicy, sweet and spicy chicken cubes on a stick.
