Activity 3.2.4 – Biographic Perspective in Roy’s Short Story

Make a submission

Read the first half of the short story “The Dead Child” by Gabrielle Roy (can be found in Unit 3 - Resource Folder). Read up until the point where the teacher enters the dead child’s home

Then answer the following questions:

  1. What expectations did you have concerning the mood of the story after reading its bleak title?
  2. Examine the sensory details (imagery) that Roy uses in the first part of “The Dead Child.” What mood does it create? Is this consistent or inconsistent with your expectations as they were set up by the title?
  3. What phrases and details especially help to create this mood?
