Assignment 5: Evolution Video Presentation

For this assignment, you will research and deliver a presentation on a topic related to artificial selection technologies or the impact of environmental changes on natural selection and endangered species. Your presentation will showcase your ability to explore a topic in-depth, present balanced arguments, and engage your audience with evidence-based insights. You will research both sides of the issue to provide a balanced perspective in your presentation.

You may choose from the following topics:

Artificial Selection Technologies

  • The benefits of artificial selection of agricultural crops for less-developed countries.

  • The advantages of planting genetically modified crops outweigh the disadvantages.

  • Selective breeding of livestock has resulted in superior farm animals compared to earlier farm animals.

Impact of Environmental Changes

  • The use of neonics (neonicotinoid pesticides) has caused the decline in the bee population.

  • The decline in the milkweed population (due to urbanization and pesticides) has reduced the Monarch butterfly population.

  • The loss of bamboo forest (due to urbanization) has reduced the giant panda population.

Suggestions:

Consider the topic from multiple perspectives (e.g., environmental, economic, ethical) to ensure a well-rounded presentation. Avoid personal opinions; instead, focus on research-supported arguments. Cite your sources.

Assignment Requirements:

  1. Conduct Research

    • Explore both sides of the issue, gathering evidence, statistics, and examples to support both sides of the issue.

    • Organize your findings into clear arguments for and against the topic.


  1. Plan Your Video Presentation

    • Structure your video presentation to include:

      • An introduction outlining the topic and its relevance.

      • A discussion of arguments for the topic.

      • A discussion of arguments against the topic.

      • A conclusion summarizing the key points and presenting your analysis.

    • Consider using visuals (e.g., slides, charts, images) to support your arguments if applicable.

  1. Record Your Video Presentation

    • Use a device with video and audio-recording capability (e.g., laptop or desktop).

    • Ensure your video is clear, well-lit, and easy to hear.

    • Speak directly to the camera and maintain eye contact and an engaging tone.

    • The video should be 5-7 minutes long.

  2. Prepare Your Materials for Submission:

    • Video mp4 File or Link: Compress your video to less than 5MB for directly submit to Moodle, or use an alternative submission method below:

      • Upload the video to YouTube (set to Unlisted) and submit the link.

      • Upload the video to Google Drive (ensure “anyone with the link” can view) and submit the link.

    • Presentation Outline: A written outline of your video presentation (use the template provided).

    • References: A bibliography or list of sources used in your research, formatted in APA style.
