Assignment 8: Plants that Changed the World

Plants have played a vital role in shaping human societies, economies, and ecosystems. In this assignment, you will investigate the relationship between one plant species and human society by examining its biology, uses, historical significance, and role in sustainability. Your findings will be compiled into a creative and organized presentation (e.g., a report, slideshow, video, or poster).

Learning Goals
  • I will be able to understand the natural history and biology of a plant species.
  • I will be able to evaluate how its products impact human society and the environment.
  • I will be able to analyze sustainability issues related to the plant’s production and use.
  • I will be able to explore technologies and careers connected to plant production.

PART 1: PLANT BIOLOGY

  • Choose a plant species that has significantly influenced human society (e.g., wheat, cotton, maple, or medicinal plants).
  • Research and describe:
    • The plant’s size, appearance, and growth patterns.
    • Its natural habitat, including environmental factors that affect its growth.
    • Its global distribution (include maps or diagrams).

PART 2: PLANT PRODUCT(S)

  • Identify the product(s) derived from this plant (e.g., food, fibre, medicine).
  • Explain the physical or chemical properties that make the product useful.
  • If possible, obtain a sample of the product and evaluate its properties (e.g., nutrients, flexibility, texture).
  • Use visuals (photos, tables, diagrams) to showcase your findings.

PART 3: ROLE IN HUMAN SOCIETY

  • Research and describe the historical use of this plant in Canada and globally.
  • Present your findings using a creative format (e.g., timeline, infographic).
  • Analyze the plant’s impact on:
    • Economy (e.g., trade, industries, employment).
    • Environment (e.g., land use, deforestation, biodiversity).
    • Quality of Life (e.g., health, food security, cultural importance).
  • Evaluate the plant’s significance to societal growth and development. Support your evaluation with data where possible.

PART 4: TECHNOLOGY AND RESEARCH

  • Outline technologies used to grow, reproduce, and process the plant. Use visuals (e.g., flowcharts, diagrams) to explain to processes.
  • Conduct a cost-benefit analysis of the economic, social, and environmental impacts of these technologies.
  • Investigate research efforts aimed at reducing negative environmental effects related to the plant.

PART 5: CAREER CONNECTIONS

  • Identify and list at least two careers related to the plant or its products.
  • Choose one career to research in-depth:
    • What education, training, or skills are required?
    • Where are these careers commonly found (industries, locations)?
CONCLUSION
  • Reflect on your findings and evaluate the following statements:

    • “This plant product has had a significant impact on the growth and development of human society.”
    • “The properties and value of this product can be explained through an understanding of plant biology.”
    • “Sustaining the use of this plant product depends on technologies that support ecosystems and maintain plant diversity.”
  • Support your conclusions with evidence from your research.

What to Submit:

  1. Choose one of the following formats for your final presentation:

    • Written report (4-6 pages, times news roman, 12 point font)

    • Slide presentation (10-15 slides)

    • Video (5-8 minutes)

    • Poster or infographic

  1. A reference list (APA style), list all sources used in preparing your report, slides, video or poster and ensure the citations are complete and accurate.

Success Criteria

Your assignment will be assessed based on the following.

  • Research and Knowledge: Depth and accuracy of information on the plant species, its products, and its historical and societal impact.

  • Thinking and Analysis: Quality of evaluations, cost-benefit analysis, and connections to sustainability.

  • Communication: Organization, creativity, and clarity in presenting findings.

  • Application: Connections made between plant biology, sustainability, and human society.
