Still -Life Drawing

Due: Saturday, 30 March 2024, 10:00 AM

What you will Learn:

You will create a drawing of a contemporary object using varying shades. Your still life will be an arrangement of several different objects. You will use various observational drawing skills and shading techniques. You will use a range of values, highlights, and shadows to create visual texture and the illusion of three-dimensional forms in your drawing.

What you will Need:

-Various Objects for still life.

-Viewing frame

-Sketch paper and drawing pencils

-Sketchbook

What will you do:

1. Work at home to collect five to seven objects of varying size, texture, and shape. Arrange the objects into a still life that has visual interest from every side and angle. Include cloth or plants for additional interest. Shine a light on an area of the still life to intensify highlights and shadows.

2. Arrange yourself so that you see an interesting part of the still life. Use a viewing frame to focus on a desired part of arrangement. The edges frame the still life and present how your composition will look.

3. Plan and organize your drawing. Create several sketches of the still life. Draw your composition that it fills the page. Take time to note the different values.

4. Choose your best sketch to transfer to your sketchbook. Lightly draw the desired composition. Use shading techniques and show a range of light and dark values in the objects. Note where the light shines and leaves these areas white. Make sure to recreate mid tones and the darkest shadow areas. Gradually build up your values. Work from the darkest to lightest areas.  Use softer pencils for darker values.
