Homework 5.3
Toronto is a major city in Canada. The Mayor of Toronto recently heard about Blue Zones and how following the lifestyle of Blue Zones can improve people’s health, thereby decreasing healthcare budgets. The Mayor has asked for your help to analyze the city.
Read the information below and make some recommendations to the Mayor based on The Power Nine.
Transportation:
Most people travel by car or public transportation. Very few people bike because there aren’t any bike lanes on the road.
Grocery stores:
The healthy food are all on the side of the store. The packaged foods are in the center of the store. The unhealthy snacks are all near the check-out counters.
Restaurants:
There are lots of different ethnic and fast food restaurants everywhere. Fast food restaurants are usually within waling distance to every community. Restaurants all feature meat as the main feature, which the exception of some vegan restaurants.
Community:
There are lots of churches and religious groups in Toronto. The city also has many community centers that encourage citizens to participate in community events.
Parks:
Most communities have a nearby park that people can walk to. Lots of people own dogs, so many dog walkers will walk to the park.
Schools:
School cafeterias tend to serve the typical American diet, which is high in meat and oily foods. Vending machines also feature unhealthy snacks.
Work culture:
Toronto is a fast-paced city that attracts many ambitious and high-talent young professionals. People take pride in working hard and achieving results. People also have to work hard to pay for the high cost of living in the city.
