Paragraph Writing
Using the answers to your questions, plan a 3-5 paragraph expository essay discussing the topic of homelessness. The purpose of your essay is to educate the public about homelessness and suggest ways of dealing with this issue.
In today’s class, you will write ONE paragraph.
Remember, each paragraph should talk about a different sub-topic.
Below are some ideas that you may include in your paragraphs.
- What is homelessness
- What causes homelessness
- Who is affected by homelessness? ( which groups of people usually become homeless?)
- What is it like to be homeless?
- What is the impact of homelessness on society?
- Where do you see homelessness in your community?
- What is your country/ community doing to help those who are homeless?
- What ideas do you have about how to deal with this issue?
Begin by deciding the topic of each paragraph. For example:
Paragraph 1- definition and causes of homelessness
Paragraph 2- The impact of homelessness on the individual and society
Paragraph 3 - Current and potential solutions to the problem.
Then, choose the topic that you are most comfortable with, and write the paragraph.
Your paragraph must have
- A topic sentence that introduces the point to be discussed
- An explanation, giving details about the main point
- An example that clearly shows that point is true
- An explanation about the significance of your example
- A concluding sentence that sums up your ideas and transitions to the next paragraph
