Activity 3.3.1 – Eveline: A Characterization
Listen to the recording of a reading of the short story Eveline by James Joyce and follow along with the print copy (can be found in Unit 3 - Resource Folder). Highlighted words are in the glossary
Pause the reading and in your JOURNAL (Journalling 100) write down any questions you may have about the characterization that Joyce is building about the nineteen-year old girl named Eveline.
Consider the following in your characterization:
- Her family situation
- Where she works
- Her relationship with her father
- Her connection with her mother
- How she met her future husband
- The nature of their relationship
- Where they will live
- How will her marriage change her life and the lives of her family?
This is known as a reading record – What information is the writer providing and how is James Joyce making this young bride-to-be come alive as a three dimensional 'round' character.
What is your response to the ending?
Make and complete the table below. Under each column title, paste a line or phrase from the text which provides a reason.
