Activity 4.1.1 - My Introductory Paragraph

Make a submission

Write an introductory paragraph to an essay on the general topic of vaccinations

You decide what your focus might be. Maybe you are against them, or think they should be mandatory. Maybe you want the essay to be about three worldwide pandemics and the role vaccines played. You might decide to include Covid-19 in the essay but this is NOT an essay about the COVID pandemic – it’s about vaccinations as a general subject.

You will develop the main body paragraphs later. In this first activity just focus on the introduction: the hook and the three main points/ideas/arguments that you think are important and could be developed in three body paragraphs about vaccinations.

The Introductory Paragraph contains:

  1. The THEME and THE HOOK (a quote and/or fact and/or anecdote)  - either one can come first
  2. A sentence or two about each of the 3 KEY points, arguments, ideas to be developed later in the essay
  3. A THESIS STATEMENT (your belief which can be argued by someone else who might disagree).

Things to ask yourself:

  • What questions about vaccinations would I like to investigate in preparing to write this essay?
  • What have I identified as a possible thesis?
  • How do I plan to search online databases as potential sources of information for my essay? (AVOID WIKIPEDIA which is unreliable)

Your teacher will arrange for you to share your Introductory paragraph with a peer partner for their feedback.
