“Shattered” Drawing Inspired by Cubism
Opened: Friday, 1 November 2024, 12:00 AM
In this assignment, students will create a “Shattered” drawing inspired by Cubist techniques. They will choose a familiar object or scene and draw it as if seen from multiple angles simultaneously, breaking the object into abstract, fragmented shapes. Students should incorporate principles like simplified geometric forms, fractured perspective, and a limited color palette to mirror the essence of Cubism.
Materials
- Sketch paper or heavy drawing paper
- Pencils, erasers, rulers
- Reference photos of objects/scenes for inspiration
Drawing Tips
- TAKE YOUR TIME to do it right the first time.
- Keep the outlines light.
- Keep your pencil sharp.
- Keep your shading strokes in one direction only.
- Build up darker areas with many light, smooth layers of pencil, added gradually.
- Start with light shading; you can always go back and darken it later.
- Each section is a miniature value scale. Each should contain the white of the paper, rich blacks, and all shades of gray in between.
- TAKE YOUR TIME!
- Shade in the direction of each shape to keep the edges crisp.
- When you’re finished, make sure the edges of the shapes are crisp. The white edge of one shape should be next to the darkest part of the adjacent shape.
- Step back from your drawing! Stand about ten feet away to gain a new perspective. Which areas need touch-ups?
- Ask a classmate, “What areas could I improve?”
