Lois Gould thinks it’s wrong that we stick boys and girls into boxes based on their sex. She thinks it’s bad for kids because it stops them from being themselves and makes them feel like they have to act a certain way. This can lead to kids picking on each other and not letting kids enjoy things they might actually like.
She thinks we can change this by letting kids explore what they like, whether it’s “boy” things or “girl” things or both. We should show kids examples of people who don’t follow the usual rules about what boys and girls are supposed to do. We should also help kids be proud of who they are, even if it’s different from what other people expect. And most importantly, we should teach kids to be nice to each other and not judge someone based on whether they’re a boy or a girl. The story of X shows how much better things could be if we just let kids be kids.
