Lesson Activity: A Poem About a Place
For today's in-class task, we will be creating a poem about a place. Here are the steps you need to get started:
Step 1. Think of a place. This place can be any place at all. It can be a supermarket, a country, a landscape, a room etc.
Step 2. You will need to pick ONE of the following subgenres of poetry:
- Tercet (Three lined poem, rhymes.)
- Cinquain (Five lined poem, does not rhyme.)
- Diamante (Seven lined poem, has the following format:
Line 1 – Your topic (noun)
Line 2 – Two adjectives about
Line 3 – Three “ing” words about
Line 4 – Four nouns or short phrase linking topic (or topics)
Line 5 – Three “ing” words about
Line 5 – Two adjectives about
Line 7 – Your ending topic (noun).)
Haiku (Three lined poem, does not rhyme. The first line has 3 syllables, the second line has 5 syllables, the third line has 3 syllables.)
Free Verse (Does not follow a direct rhyming style or pattern, can be any number of line or stanzas.)
Acrostic (Any number of lines. The first letter of each line, read down the page, spells the subject of the poem.)
Step 3. Name the poem subgenre type in your forum post.
