Q4: Based on your personality analysis, what personality conflicts might occur in the group?

Steve (D-Type) wants to get things done quickly. Christine and Janet are C-Types, so they want to do things slowly and carefully.

Mike is an Explorer, while Christine and Janet are Sentinels. Sentinels demand reliability. Explorers want fun and excitement.

Q5: Which of the 5 factors of team success did they not do?

Set shared team goals:

1.      How high of a grade is everyone Ok with?

2.      What kind of team experience do we want to have? Is it all business or can we also have fun?

Set shared team values. For example, respect, trust, open-communication, responsibility.

Set ground rules. Examples:

1.      Being on time for meetings

2.      How much notice to give for a meeting

3.      Frequency of meetings

4.      What to do if you can’t attend a meeting

5.      What to do if you can’t complete your responsibilities for personal reasons

Assign tasks based on strengths. They didn’t even known each other’s strengths and weaknesses.

Part 3: Recommendation

If you were Christine in her situation at the end of the case, what would you do?

As tempting as it might be to focus on just getting the report done without making Mike feel included, that would hurt the relationship with Mike and could lower the contribution grade for each member.

Christine should first take responsibility for her failure to act as an effective team leader. She can do that by apologizing to Mike for not communicating well with Mike, for not noticing when Mike needed help, and for not identifying Mike’s strengths so that she could give Mike appropriate tasks to contribute to the team.

After Christine apologizes and communicates with Mike, Mike will likely respect Christine and want to help. Since Mike is probably an Entertainer type in Myers-Briggs, he excels in crisis situations. Now that Mike has motivation to help the team, he can work hard and fast to finish his part for the team. If he really cannot do work because of his girlfriend issue, Christine can get Mike’s permission to assign his work to the rest of the team without any emotional conflicts.
