Lecture Overview

Many times during our schooling we are asked to participate in a seminar either alone, paired with another student, or even as part of a small group or 3 or 4 other students.

The teacher will assign a topic for the seminar and each student will be assigned with a piece of research to undertake.

The topic is one that has been an issue throughout the history of Canada. It deals with attempts by the Government of Canada to integrate the First Nations people into so-called “white European” society that is the basis for settlement of the country since the 15th century.

As this course is being designed, there has been a lot of revelations in the media about an education system known as the “Indian Residential School.” From the late1800s until the mid-1990s laws were passed in the country forcing the First Nations/Indigenous families living on reservations to place their children from the age of 3 into schools where they lived and studied. The system was a tragic failure because it aimed to cut off indigenous children from their families, their culture and traditions.
