Lecture Overview
Your homework assignment was to read Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost.
Can you identify any common theme or similarity between this poem and Frost’s other poem Acquainted With the Night? In what ways are they similar? (being alone in the world – night time – needing time to think ; the difference is that one poem’s tone is dark and one is light – one is set in a city – one out in rural farm area)
- How can you connect the poem to any experience in your own life ... Past or Present? (this is a shared experience – slowing down our lives to take in a moment of beauty and serenity)
- What can you praise about the text? (It’s mystery, open-ended)
- What problems do you find with the text?
- What is your favourite sound imagery? Bells - snowflakes
- Why do you think Frost repeats the last line? He does it to emphasize the distance ‘and miles to go before I sleep’
- Identify one example of the use of alliteration. (‘sounds the sweep’ ‘dark and deep’)
- Frost’s poems are never just about the event he describes. They can be considered as an allegory (look up the meaning of the word in Lesson #1’s GLOSSARY). What could this poem really be about? (we are all on a journey in life – the road unknown. Frost’s most famous poem is about the Road Not Taken which you are going to read and respond to in the next activity.
