Lecture Overview

Although knowledge and familiarity with literary devices is stressed in English classes, the essential objective in reading poetry is to develop an appreciation and a deeper understanding of Meaning and Message for us in our lives or to enrich and expand our understanding of the world. Literature can make us better people and the world a better place because literature exposes us to characters and actions of a wide variety throughout the world.

As teenagers, we live in a bubble that is protected and quite restricted. In the last lesson of this unit we’ll look at a poem titled “What did I Miss?” The narrator is a teacher who provides many different answers to students when they ask what information they missed that was taught during a class they missed.

Teacher reads Home for the Aged by Elizabeth Brewster. Which is a reminder that we are only in this world for a short time and that we have many resources and experiences to absorb in our life times before they end.
