Lecture 2.4.3 – The Purpose of Literary Devices
Lecture Overview
Although knowledge and familiarity with literary devices is stressed in English classes, the essential objective in reading poetry is to develop an appreciation and a deeper understanding of Meaning and Message for us in our lives or to enrich and expand our understanding of the world. Literature can make us better people and the world a better place because literature exposes us to characters and actions of a wide variety throughout the world. As teenagers, we live in a bubble that is protected and quite restricted. In the last lesson of this unit we’ll look at a poem titled “What did I Miss?” The narrator is a teacher who provides many different answers to students when they ask what information they missed that was taught during a class they missed. Teacher reads Home for the Aged by Elizabeth Brewster. Which is a reminder that we are only in this world for a short time and that we have many resources and experiences to absorb in our life times before they end.
