Lecture 1.2.0 – Speak up and Speak Out
Lecture Overview
The first lesson will have prepared each of you for today’s lesson. Today you will be expected to SPEAK UP AND SPEAK OUT.
It is extremely important as a student both in high school and at the university to be not only an active listener but also an active speaker. WHY? If you sit back and don’t speak up when you should – when you don’t understand a concept the professor is teaching or an assignment a science teacher gives, you risk being left behind or making an error.
WHEN to speak out? By asking questions, offering your ideas and opinions, participating in group seminars and making presentations.
By having studied TED Talk speakers and learning the most effective speaking strategies they use to help you focus as a listener, you should be able to follow their example in how you present yourself as an effective speaker.
There’s an expression I heard recently which sums up the problem that can arise when we remain silent in spite of having an issue with something we’ve heard. Don’t be a student who would rather ‘GO WITHOUT’ than ‘STAND OUT’. When you speak up, you stand out. That takes confidence and overcoming shyness and discomfort. GOING WITHOUT means you won’t get the help and information you need.
Use the activities in this lesson to build your self-confidence as speakers using the techniques that will make you stronger oral communicators.
