Lecture Overview

Teacher reviews London’s Summer Morning on SMARTboard and analyzes it according to the questions assigned in the previous activity. The objective is to model for students how to begin an analysis with some simple, basic questions.

Begins by showing Images of Victorian England street paintings from the era (LINK)  

  1. In what ways can we connect with what the narrator is seeing and saying?

The narrator uses vivid imagery that triggers our senses. With the narrator’s words, we are expected to see, hear and smell the city coming to life. Highlight examples.

  1. What is the story that is developing in the poem? 

The narrator points out the city of London coming alive beginning in the morning and throughout the day. The narrator points out all the different people in the city and their jobs.

  1. What do you like about the poem? What problems do you find with the poem?

This is a personal answer. You can say it reminds us of a similar experience when walking around a city in which you live or a new one that you are visiting. 

  1. How does the imagery in this poem help you to understand the ideas and emotions the narrator is experiencing?

The use of imagery appeals to all five senses. Highlight examples.
