Lecture Overview

In the following activity, you will read a four page essay entitled Essentials of the Short Story by Thomas Byrnes from The Writer’s Handbook, p. 210 (can be found in Unit 3 - Resource Folder).

It is recommended that you print out a copy and highlight and make some notes directly on the page – between the lines or in the side margins. This is a process known as annotation.  Annotating has many benefits. I have placed a document called “Notes on Annotation” in the Unit 3 - Resource Folder about the Why, When and How of annotation.

  1. Direct engagement with the text
  2. A quick way to review later
  3. Recommend this for the novel study and the play in later units
  4. Annotation Marks (Teacher demonstration)
  5. This can also be done online and on a hard copy

You will all be writing more and more as this course progresses – so pay close attention to the advice in Byrnes’s essay. It has a lot to say about what makes a great story, and what makes a story interesting to us.
