Lecture 3.1.2 – Deep Reading and Annotating
Lecture Overview
In the following activity, you will read a four page essay entitled Essentials of the Short Story by Thomas Byrnes from The Writer’s Handbook, p. 210 (can be found in Unit 3 - Resource Folder). It is recommended that you print out a copy and highlight and make some notes directly on the page – between the lines or in the side margins. This is a process known as annotation. Annotating has many benefits. I have placed a document called “Notes on Annotation” in the Unit 3 - Resource Folder about the Why, When and How of annotation. You will all be writing more and more as this course progresses – so pay close attention to the advice in Byrnes’s essay. It has a lot to say about what makes a great story, and what makes a story interesting to us.
