Lecture Overview

Margaret Artwood was born in 1939, currently in 2021 she is  81 years old and still going strong as a writer.

As a student she attended Victoria College at the U of T, Margaret Atwood is Canada's most eminent novelist and poet, and also writes short stories, critical studies, screenplays, radio scripts and books for children; her works have been published in 45 countries and translated into approximately 39 languages.

  • 18 books of poetry
  • 18 novels
  • 11 non-fiction (one about Canadian Literature)
  • 8 books for children

She has won just about every major writing award and will no doubt win the Nobel Prize one day – hopefully soon – given her age.

She has taught at York University, University of Toronto, Sir George William University in Montreal; the University of British Columbia, the University of Alberta and at several colleges in the USA (they refer to their Universities as Colleges!!)

In her interview she reminds us of several things  – Stories must have conflict – they must have the unexpected event and surprises.

We must feel that we are “right there with the character” watching them make decision that we think are good or we think are bad choices.

The question you must ask yourself – consistently and constantly ‘ How would I deal with it? (example: Swimming through the tunnel”?)

As you watch the interview with two British high school students, turn on the cc (closed captions) to follow along if you have problem with the British students accent.
