Lecture Overview

In this lesson, we are going to review Chapter 47 before starting Chapter 48.

Review

Chapter 47: Some of the social workers in the hospital direct Saul to the New Dawn Center for rehabilitation. They add that if Saul keeps drinking, he could die. Saul reluctantly agrees to give the facility a try. At this point, the narrative has nearly come full-circle: this is about the point where we first met Saul at the beginning of the novel..

Overview of Chapter 48

Even though the book has come full circle, Saul still hasn’t had any epiphanies/ revelations about himself. Think about characterization: dynamic characteristics. Saul seems just as angry and bitter as he ever was.

(Warning: there is content about suppressed memory and abuse in Chapter 49)
