Vocabulary for Line and Drawing Lessons


Drawing: A visual representation made using tools like pencils, pens, or charcoal.

Line Quality (Line Weight): The thickness or thinness of a line.

Horizontal Line: A line that runs parallel to the horizon, suggesting calmness and stability.

Vertical Line: A line that moves up and down without slant, often symbolizing strength.

Diagonal Line: A slanted line that creates a sense of movement or tension.

Contour Line: A line that defines the edges and surface details of an object.

Cross-Contour Line: Lines that follow the form of an object, helping to create depth and dimension.

Outline: The outer edge of a shape or object, typically drawn with a single, continuous line to define its form.

Contrast: The difference between light and dark areas in an artwork.

Hatching: A shading technique using closely spaced parallel lines.

Cross-Hatching: a shading technique that uses sets of lines (strokes) that overlap.

Stippling: A shading technique using tiny dots to create texture and value.

Blending: A technique that smooths and softens transitions between values using a finger, blending stump, or tissue.

Art Medium: The material used to create a work of art, such as pencil, charcoal, or ink.
