Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity with respect to time. It is a vector quantity.

The average acceleration over an interval is : \( \Delta t \)

\( \vec{a}= \frac{ \Delta \vec{v} }{ \Delta t }= \frac{ \vec{v}_2 - \vec{v}_1}{ \Delta t } \)

It SI unit is \( m/s^2 \).

EXAMPLE PROBLEM #1

A car accelerates from rest and reaches a speed of \( 18 m/s \) [W] in \( 6.2s \). Determine its average acceleration.

SOLUTION:

The same car then stops in 5.4s. Determine its average acceleration while stopping.

EXAMPLE PROBLEM #2

Gravity accelerates all objects at \( 9.81 m/s^2 \). How fast is an objects travelling if it falls for 8.2s?
