Lesson 3.2 - Electric Field

RECALL: COULOMB'S LAW

If we let one charge be a positive test charge on charge 1C and move it around and measure the force at all these points we will generate a vector field representing the force field around a charge \(q_1\).

DEFINING ELECTRIC FIELD

The term on the left defines the influence of the charge q. We call this the Electric Field measured in Newtons/Coulombs [N/C].

The electric field lines of two equal same charges viewed along a line of sight perpendicular to the system axis. Notice the electric field is zero at the midpoint of the two charges.

The electric field of two equal but opposite charges (dipole).

EXAMPLE PROBLEM #1

Determine the electric field at point D.
