Inertia

Inertia is a property of matter that causes a mass to resist changes in motion.

The larger the mass the larger the inertia (it becomes more difficult to change its velocity).

Consider the difference in pushing one textbook across a desk and pushing a stack of textbooks.

NEWTON'S FIRST LAW

If the net force acting on an object is zero, the object will remain at rest or at constant velocity.

NEWTON'S SECOND LAW

If the net force is NOT zero, an object will accelerate in the direction of the net force. The acceleration is proportional to the net force and inversely proportional to the object's mass.

 EXAMPLE PROBLEM #1

The Tesla 100D (with Ludicrous + update) can accelerate from 0 to 60mph in 2.4s. If it weights 4960lb, what is the net force required to accelerate it to this speed?

SOLUTION:

NEWTON'S THIRD LAW

For every action force, there is a reaction force equal in magnitude, but in the opposite direction.
