Lesson 4.8 - The House on Mango Street Section 7
Specific Expectations: READING 1.3, 1.5, WRITING 2.2, 4.1, 4.2
Learning Goals: By the end of this lesson you will
- be able to identify a variety of characteristics of literary text forms and demonstrate insight into the way they help communicate meaning;
- be able to analyse texts in terms of the information, ideas, issues, or themes they explore, examining how various aspects of the texts contribute to the presentation or development of these elements
Teacher reads the Vignette "Sally" on pages 81-83.
As you annotate and underline text, think about and discuss the following questions and come to some conclusions:
- What do you think is Sally's nationality?
- What dual/double lives does Sally lead? Why is Sally trying to be another person? How does this affect Sally's identity?
- Reflect on these questions and make notes on the page or in your Journal where you find evidence.
Read ahead to the Vignette titled The Monkey Garden on pages 94-98.
It's another chapter in Sally's life. Esperanza has come to a turning point in her own life. We can call it an epiphany. What does that word mean?
Reflect on what has caused this epiphany and how you think Esperanza has changed?
You will be assigned to read a vignette that we have not read together in class. Here is the list of assigned vignettes. Choose one to read (first come, first serve)
1. The Earl of Tennessee Pg 70-71.
2. There Was an Old Woman... pg 29-30.
3. Four Skinny Trees. 74-75.
4. Rafaela Who Drinks Coconut & Papaya Juice. 79-80
5. Minerva Writes Poems pgs 84-85
6. Bums in the Attic pgs 86-87
7. Beautiful and Cruel. Pgs 88-89.
Make a 2-3 minute oral presentation ____ NOT A POWERPOINT ____(1) briefly summarizing what happens in the vignette you read, (2) point out any interesting literary devices you see, or tell the class about anything else you think reflects Cisneros's unique writing style.
If you think the vignette has a theme - describe it. Does it fit in with any other theme that is developed in the novel?
I want you to share the vignette page(s) on screen so the class can see the story as you talk about it. Highlights and annotated marks can be included on the page.
PRACTICE ! ... PRACTICE ! ... PRACTICE YOUR PRESENTATION SO THAT IT IS NO LONGER THAN 3 MINUTES AND NO SHORTER THAN 2 MINUTES.
