Lesson 3.1 Cross-cultural communication: Different ways of thinking
Learning Goals:
By the end of this lesson students will
- 1) Learn cross-cultural communication and its importance and relevant tips through analyzing samples and matching and reading activities
- 2) Improve listening and speaking skills through class discussion
- 3) Use new vocabulary appropriately
- 4) Learn to analyze and give feedback to peers’ performance
- 5) Improve public speaking skills
- 6) Improve presentation skill
- 7) Enhance teamwork through group activities
Instructions:
1. Topic Selection: Under the title Chinese culture vs Western culture: … you will select one different aspect of Chinese and western cultures on your own. The following topics are for your reference:

· interpersonal interaction 人际交往
· workplace culture 职场文化
· individualism 个人主义
· collectivism 集体主义
· pragmatism 实用主义
· harmony & conflicts 和谐与冲突
· creativity & originality 创新与创意

2. Research: Conduct thorough research on the chosen topic. Gather information on that particular aspect and then support them with examples. Utilize credible sources such as scientific journals, textbooks, and reputable websites.
3. Presentation Preparation: Create a slideshow presentation (10-15 minutes) that includes visually appealing slides with images and concise and clear text. Ensure that the presentation covers the following aspects:
○ Introduction/ Overview
○ Similarities and differences of Chinese and Western cultures on this specific aspect
○ Examples
○ Reference page in APA style (minimum of 3 sources). Use in-text citations throughout the presentation, even pictures!
