This is Part 1 of the Unit’s OF Learning Evaluation. It is worth 5% of your final mark.

Go online and find an illustration of an Archaeopteryx. Copy and paste one that  you like into a WORD doc and begin reading the poem The Archaeopteryx’s Song by Edwin Morgan. The poem is found in the Unit 2 - Resource Folder.

As you read, connect the poet’s words with the picture. Does the tail look “like a stony pedestal and not a rudder.” A rudder is used for steering an airplane through the air or guiding a boat through water.

Morgan next mentions various dinosaurs with their plates and plaques. He describes their habitat and some of their behaviour. Find more pictures online that illustrate habitat and behaviour such as the words “horn-lock” and paste them into your document.

By illustrating the unfolding “story” in the poem using illustrations, you should make the meaning of the poem become clearer. Seeing imagery in what we read is a major step to deep reading, which is what this activity and this course hopes to teach. It is a skill the teacher expects you to acquire as we go further into the individual units.

Find at least eight (8) images that illustrate the poem and paste those into your WORD doc. Arrange the pictures in such a way that it not only tells the story of the dinosaur, but is visually appealing. Include specific quotations beside your pictures to emphasize what you are illustrating .

At the bottom of the WORD doc write a short paragraph of between 50-100 words describing what you think the message of the poem is. Quote some words and lines from the poem to support your beliefs.
