Activity 2.4.1 – Literary Devices in the poem ‘Problem Child’

Read the poem titled 'Problem Child' by the Canadian poet Elizabeth Brewster. The poem can be found in Unit 2 - Resource Folder.

  1. Identify the two similes used in the poem.  Explain the technical meanings of each simile and what they suggest.
  2. Identify the metaphor used in the second stanza. What two things/ideas are being linked?  
  3. Identify the touch imagery in the poem and explain its meaning.
  4. Identify the use of Assonance in the third stanza of the poem. Assonance is the use of vowel sounds in words that follow one another closely.
