Macbeth Essay Assignment

Due: Wednesday, 17 December 2025, 8:00 PM

You will write a 5–6 paragraph literary essay (about 750–1000 words) on Macbeth by William Shakespeare.
Choose ONE of the topics below.

Your essay must:

  • have a clear argument (thesis)

  • use specific scenes and quotes from the play

  • explain what the scenes and quotes show

  • be written in formal paragraph style

  • include an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion

After you submit the essay, you will have a short conversation (5–10 minutes) with the teacher.
In this conversation, you must:

  • explain your main argument in your own words

  • show where your evidence comes from in the play

  • explain why the quotes you chose support your ideas


Choose ONE Essay Topic

1. Ambition

Explain how ambition affects Macbeth’s decisions and leads to his downfall.
Use scenes with MacbethLady Macbeth, and/or the Witches to support your argument.
You may discuss imagery like darknessblood, or visions, and include key quotes such as:

  • “Vaulting ambition which o’erleaps itself”

  • “Stars, hide your fires”


2. The Role of Women

Explain how Shakespeare shows the power or influence of women in the play.
Focus on characters such as Lady Macbeththe Witches, or Lady Macduff.
Use scenes that show how these women affect the actions of others or challenge gender expectations.
You may include quotes such as:

  • “Unsex me here”

  • “When you durst do it, then you were a man.”


3. Good vs. Evil

Explain how Shakespeare shows the struggle between good and evil in the play.
You may compare characters such as MacbethBanquoMacduff, or King Duncan.
Use scenes that show characters making moral choices or facing the consequences of their actions.
You may include quotes such as:

  • “Fair is foul, and foul is fair.”

  • “Will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood clean from my hand?”


Essay Length and Structure

Your essay must be 5–6 paragraphs, approximately 750–1000 words, and include:

Paragraph 1 – Introduction

  • Introduce the play and your topic

  • End with a clear thesis (your argument)

 Body Paragraphs

  • Each paragraph focuses on one main idea

  • Use at least one quote per paragraph

  • Explain how the quote supports your argument

 Conclusion

  • Restate your main argument

  • Summarize your points

  • End with a final thought about the theme in the play


Conversation Assessment

After handing in your essay, you must complete a short conversation with me.
In this conversation, you must:

  • Explain your thesis in your own words

  • Summarize your main points

  • Show where your evidence appears in the play (you may use your script or a digital copy)

  • Explain how your quotes support your argument

  • Answer a few simple questions about the ideas in your essay

This conversation helps confirm that you understand your work and can explain your thinking.
