Chapter 1 Questions
Without reading any of the novel, you have learned a lot of information about the story. Now you are ready to begin reading.
Chapter 1 begins the day after Mieko has arrived at her grandparents' farm, a long way from her parents, who live near Nagasaki. The Americans dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima
on August 6, 1945 and on Nagasaki two days later on August 8. This ended World War II. The novel begins two weeks later.
The chapter title is "Mieko." You know she is the main character and you know she is bitter, frightened, and angry. Twice in the chapter, the author says Mieko feels "sorry for herself."
