You will create a PowerPoint of 8-10 content slides (not counting the Title slide and the Vignettes Reference Slide). Your PowerPoint will be chosen from one of the topics listed below.

You must include evidence from six (6) or more Vignettes. Put the titles of those vignettes - properly spelled - in a reference slide).  Refer to the Powerpoint Rubric in the UNIT #4: Long Fiction Unit Folder

POWERPOINT TOPICS: Choose 1 of the 5 (no more than 2 students can present the same topic)

 TOPIC #1:  Physical appearance and clothing are common motifs used throughout The House on Mango Street. They are often used as a means of escaping the harsh realities of life. Prove it!

 TOPIC #2: Cisneros’s novel writing style (known as diction) is unconventional prose. Her background as a poet is evident in the text throughout the novel. Describe at least 10 different and unique illustrations of Cisneros's poetic style used throughout the novel.

 TOPIC #3: From the start of the novel,  Esperanza realizes that men and women live in “separate worlds,” and that women are nearly powerless in her Chicago community.  What is the evidence for this? In what ways does the novel illustrate that men and women, boys and girls are shown to act differently, and expect to be treated differently by others?

 TOPIC #4: One of the major themes of the novel is "Coming of Age". However, there are many other themes. Illustrate at least four (4) of those other themes, but do not include "coming of age.".

TOPIC #5: Several adults in the novel appear to be very negative role models for the children who live on Mango Street. Who are those negative role models? Consider at least five (5) different adults (men and women) in your analysis. In what ways do they fail as positive influences? Demonstrate this without any reference to Esperanza's parent.

TOPIC #6 It has often been said that what we value can be determined by what we sacrifice. Consider how this statement applies to at least two characters in the novel. Select characters who have deliberately sacrificed, surrendered, or forfeited something in a way that highlights that character’s values.  In your slides, analyze how the particular sacrifice illuminates the characters' values, and provides a deeper understanding of the meaning of the novel as a whole. Do not merely summarize the plot.
