Page 68: What are the functions and duties of the courts?

Courts primarily serve to interpret legislation crafted by the legislative and executive branches. They also play a crucial role in resolving disputes among individuals, encompassing issues such as contracts, property, family matters, as well as conflicts between individuals and governmental entities, and among different tiers of government. Maintaining impartiality is fundamental for the integrity of our judicial system.

The judicial system safeguards rights by assuming innocence until proven guilty, conducting trials publicly, prosecuting only for offenses deemed illegal at the time, preventing self-incrimination, and providing legal representation when necessary. Moreover, it upholds laws, establishes societal norms of behavior, and both punishes and aims to rehabilitate offenders, thereby deterring unacceptable conduct.
