The town is small and quiet. People are friendly and say hello to each other. Jackson used this town because it looks nice and safe, but bad things can still happen there.

The people think Miss Strangeworth is kind and sweet. They trust her and smile at her. They do not know she writes mean letters.

She sends the letters because she thinks she is helping people. She also wants to feel important. Maybe she likes to see people worry and feel strong when she makes them upset.

The revenge was fair because Miss Strangeworth hurt many people. But it was also not nice because her roses were special to her. Breaking the roses was very mean.

I feel a little sorry for her because she was alone. But I also do not feel sorry because she made people sad on purpose.

Jackson wanted to teach us that even nice towns have secrets. She wanted to show that words can hurt people.

I agree. Today people use phones and computers to send mean words. Just like the letters, messages online can make people sad.
