1. How is de Maupassant's characterization of Mme. Loisel central to the depiction of the story's theme?

Her desire for wealth highlight the theme of the danger of pride.

2. Is the story sexist? Why or why not?

I think it's sexist since it shows a woman’s worth tied to beauty and marriage, and it also shows society’s expectations of women.

3. What comment might de Maupassant be making about social class and status?

Social class and status are shallow. We can't pursue it too much.

4. Do you feel sympathy for the protagonist? How did your feelings for her change from the start to the end?

Yes, because It is not her fault that society expects women to be refined and elegant. After she lost her friend's necklace, she chose to work hard to buy an expensive necklace instead of buying a fake one.

5. What might the necklace symbolize? Why?

The necklace symbolizes illusion.

6. Can you describe the change Mme. Loisel undergoes? In what way is this a negative change? Any positive changes?

Her life changes from vain to hard by suffering. Negative: she loses beauty and happiness. Positive: she gains strength.

7. Would the story be as effective without the twist at the end? Why or why not?

It makes the story powerful; without it, the lesson about illusions and waste would be weaker.

8. How does the story relate to today's world of social media?

Social media often pressures people to show a false, wealthy life, too.
