Even though the salary level rising in America since 2005, overall happiness has declined, showing that economic growth alone does not guarantee a better quality of life. Gross National Happiness (GNH), used in Bhutan, focuses on citizens’ well-being by considering factors such as mental health, education, environmental quality, and social relationships. The main benefit of this approach is that it helps governments create policies that improve people’s real living conditions, not just the economy. However, GNH is challenging to apply because happiness is subjective and difficult to measure, especially in a large and diverse country like the United States. America could measure GNH by using national well-being surveys and combining them with data on health, education, environment, and social welfare, while still using GDP to measure economic performance.
