Globalization affects the environment in several important ways. First, it increases pollution because goods are shipped long distances. For example, container ships carrying clothing from Bangladesh to Canada burn large amounts of fuel, adding greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. Second, it speeds up deforestation as countries clear land to produce exports, such as rainforests in Brazil being cut down to raise cattle for beef sold worldwide; and third, it leads to resource depletion as global demand grows, like overfishing in the Pacific Ocean to supply seafood to international markets, which reduces fish populations and harms marine ecosystems.
