A meaningful purpose is something that helps others or improves life in a bigger way, while a non-meaningful purpose is usually focused on things like money, status, or approval without a deeper impact.

The four levels of motivation are: external rewards, desire, duty, and love. The meaningful ones are duty and love because they come from responsibility and caring for others.

Eight common purposes people have include helping others, becoming a doctor or nurse, teaching students, protecting the environment, building a business, creating art or music, caring for family, and improving their community.

Personality tests can help by showing your strengths, interests, and traits, which can point toward a purpose that fits you. For example, if someone is very empathetic, they may find purpose in careers like counselling or healthcare.

People can find meaning in something they don’t enjoy by focusing on the impact it has on others or the future, and by connecting it to a bigger goal they care about.
