For this activity and in preparation for your Comparative Essay Assignment, read the 800 word student essay Hansel and Gretel: A COMPARATIVE ESSAY. The essay is located in the Unit 4 - Resource Folder.

The comparative essay is the work of a former student. Notice how the three ideas/arguments are established in the Introductory Paragraph and how each is described - compared and contrasted - in a separate body paragraph.

Ask yourself the following questions as you study the form and structure of the essay essay:                                                                                                 

1. What is the student’s thesis for this literary essay?
2. Which organizational pattern (A-B method or BLOCK method) did the student use?
3.  How is the supporting information incorporated into the development of  the body paragraphs? 
4. How does the student vary sentence lengths and paragraph structures to make this essay more compelling? 
5. Can you trace the transitions/links from one idea to another? Have you considered using cause-and-effect to analyze your texts?
