Value Scale - Tints, Tones, and Shades
Activity: Create a 6-Box Value Scale with Tints, Tones, and Shades
Objective:
Students will create a value scale to understand and apply tints, shades, and tones,
with a specific explanation of how tones are made and used.
Materials:
- Paints (choose one color, black, white, gray)
- Paintbrushes
- Ruler
- Paper
- Pencil
Steps:
1. Set Up Your Scale:
On your paper, draw a horizontal rectangle divided into 6 equal boxes.
You need 3 boxes.
2. Label the Boxes:
Box 1: "Tint"
Box 2: "Tone "
Box 3: "Shade"
3. Fill Each Box:
Box 1 (Tint): Section 1: Pure white. Section 2–5: Gradually mix more of the base color into white. Section 6: Pure base color (hue).

Box 2 (Tone): Section 1: Pure gray (equal parts black and white). Section 2–5: Gradually mix more of the base color into gray. Section 6: Pure base color (hue).

Box 3 (Shade): Section 1: Pure black. Section 2–5: Gradually mix more of the base color into black. Section 6: Pure base color (hue).
